  • Mayonnaise – Gives the sauce its creamy base. I use regular mayo, but light mayo can work too if you want fewer calories. Avoid Miracle Whip, as its sweetness and tang will throw off the flavor balance.
  • Honey – Adds natural sweetness and helps mellow the mustard’s sharpness. I like a local floral honey from a neighboring town’s farmers’ market.
  • Mustard – Brings tang and a bit of heat. For a more classic fast food flavor, mix half Dijon and half yellow mustard. Whole grain mustard can add texture and a more rustic taste. I use a mix of three mustards: whole grain, Dijon, and a sweet with heat mustard for a little spice, because I like spice in almost everything.
  • Salt – Just a pinch to round out the flavors.
  • Black pepper – We like freshly cracked pepper.

FAQ

Can I use yellow mustard instead of Dijon?

Yes. Yellow mustard will give a milder, less sharp flavor. You can also use a mix of mustards like I do.

Can I freeze honey mustard sauce?

We don’t recommend freezing this recipe, because mayonnaise-based sauces can separate when thawed.
